1990 Rover Mini Cooper - High Performance 1275cc (Rover Special Products Engine)

Priced for the fast sale as we have some bills that we need to pay.

This is a genuine Cooper performance model, fitted with the very special Rover Special Products (John Cooper Division) engine that has been owned by a well known name in the Mini community for 15 years. Supplied comprehensively serviced, professionally tuned and with 9 months MOT, with a HPI clear certificate, new floors underneath and the correct vented sills. Not restored, but beautiful and in very good condition, would stand up to most Mini’s within a higher bracket.

(a) The Performance Model

Combining a raw power to weight ratio with Monte Carlo rally winning handling, you have a smile on your face, it’s a terrific and/or terrifying drive, depending on your cornering bravity: this is Mini’s high-performance model, Mini’s equivalent to Audi’s RS and BMW’s M cars at the time. The Cooper engine in standard form produces over 50% more power than the 1000cc, over 20% more power than the 1275cc.

Being carburettor powered, you have the sounds and the smells of the sixties, pure nostalgia. The carburettor is a rebuilt unit, professionally tuned by a well known classic car tuner and fitted with a new K&N filter and inlet manifold.

(b) The Rover Special Products Engine

Fitted with a very special engine, the Rover Special Products (RSP), 1275cc engine. Rover Special Products was a special division formed by John Cooper himself to deliver just 2000 high performance vehicles to be sold off book.

This is not an RSP, it would have been produced around the same time, registered two months later, but is fitted with an RSP engine, one would assume fitted by the factory.

(c) Ready to Drive

Supplied with 12 months MOT and no advisories so that you can feel safe, comprehensively serviced by ourselves (a Mini specialist) so that you don’t have to worry. She has an electronic ignition, giving you reliability and a new sports exhaust, giving you that classical raw. A HPI check shows no previous accidents.

Looking underneath she is lovely and solid, see the pictures.

Accordingly, a high specification Cooper with a very special engine, ready to drive, drive hard, proper classic motoring.

Notes

A beautiful example, tremendous behind the wheel, but an example that is 34 years old. A few notes:

  • Newly MOT'd with no advisories. Previous MOT had an advisory for surface corrosion on her subframe, now wire brushed and re-sealed, both ball joints newly replaced.

  • Two stone chips to her windscreen and some marks, I wouldn’t change it, but you could if you wanted to (new screens are £50).
  • Some wear to her interior, she is 35 years old.

  • Her mileage states just 19,000, her previous fifteen year keeper attests adamantly that such is genuine, but we can’t verify this.

  • Some paintwork defects, a little lacquer peel on her scuttle, a small amount of bubbles around her windscreen on the passenger side, see the pictures below.
